Well, swappers, we did it. The swap is complete. Everyone has mailed their quilts and everyone should be receiving packages (if they haven't already). Thank you all so much for taking time to make a wonderful surprise for your partner and for participating in our first ever swap.

Once you receive your quilt, make sure you email or write to your partner to thank them! Many swappers are emailing me because they haven't heard a peep from their secret partners. If you don't know how to contact your partner, just email me and I'll give you their email address. Or, look on the package they sent and send a card to the return address. Just thank them somehow!

Annalia used the "country corners" block which is sort of like the "lady in the lake" block but better, in my opinion. I especially love the four patch in the center.

Oh, and that quilting? You know I love that too!

By the way, Sandi hand-delivered her quilt! It turns out that Sandi and Kerri live rather close together, and so they decided to meet up and became fast friends. Does that make me a friend matchmaker?

Hi swappers! Are you ready to start making your mini quilts? I know I am! Make sure you check out the Swap Guidelines first. Also, please try to get your flickr inspirations up as soon as possible so your swap partner can get started on their quilt for you.

Also, it's probably a good idea to give your partner some extra information, even if you know you'll be happy with anything they make. I know that I have a hard time making something for someone when I have no idea what they like. Giving them a place to start is nice and might help prevent panic attacks and crippling doubt (or is that just me?). It doesn't have to be much...we recommend a blog post (or a note on your flickr mosaic picture) listing some likes, dislikes, and any preferences you have (size, shape, color, etc). See my post (copied from my blog) as an example:

1. XOXO quilt, 2. Nine-patch Quilt - quilting, 3. Craftster Quilt Block (for me), 4. Flying Geese Table Runner in Pink detail, 5. { geometric squares quilt }, 6. finished, 7. Star Quilt Top, 8. I love bright colors, especially lime green, orange, teal and magenta (alone or in any combination). I love white or grey or tan for backgrounds. I'd be perfectly happy with one block or repeated blocks, borders, sashing or not, off center or on center, any size, square or rectangle...really, whatever you feel like.

I'm not into purple or dull colors.

Other than that, I just want you to have fun and design something that you love! Choose colors that inspire you, something that will be fun to piece, something that feels like "you". Hanging tabs would be welcome (I know I'll want to hang it up in the studio!) but I can also put them on myself.

I'm just really excited to see what you come up with!

Modify Tradition Swap Guidelines

Hi, folks! You should have received your secret partner's information by now. If not, please email me! Here are the swap guidelines.

SIZE: 12x12" to 24x24" finished quilt. Invisible hanging tabs welcome.

CONSTRUCTION: You must use traditional blocks in some kind of modern format. See our discussions on what's modern as well as inspiration and tutorials for a place to start. Please note that you are not limited to blocks listed in our tutorials; any traditional blocks are welcome.

INSPIRATION: Please post an inspiration mosaic to our flickr group so that your partner can see your tastes. Go to fd's flick toys to make your mosaic!

LABEL: Please label the back of your quilt with your name, your partner's name, and the name of your quilt. Feel free to include the names of any blocks that you have included. Here are a few ways to label your quilts.

SECRET: This is a blind swap, so your identity will remain a secret to your partner. Please do not contact that person. Don't forget to also browse your partner's blog or flickr stream and favorites so you can secretly get to know them. You may email me if you need additional information.

Modify Tradition Swap

Group sewing has long since been part of the quilting and sewing tradition. As a virtual community, we can't engage in traditional sewing circles or bees. Thank goodness for swaps, the truly modern version of a sewing circle!

Crystal and I thought it would be great fun to host the first Modify Tradition Swap. This swap will be a blind swap, much like the Doll Quilt Swap on flickr. Each person has a different partner and no one knows who is making for them. It's a surprise!

We'll be making modern-traditional mini-quilts according to our partner's tastes. The catch-- no wonkiness allowed. That's right, you heard me. Save that wonky energy for later (wink wink).

Today's question is about picnics, of course. Do you like or dislike picnics? Do you have a favorite blanket? Did you make it? What are your favorite picnic foods? Do you have a favorite picnicking memory?

I'm crazy about picnics! I look forward to picnic season all year long. I design picnic quilts in the middle of the winter, just so I'll be ready when the time comes to use them. To me, there's nothing better to do on a summer's afternoon. My boyfriend and I usually go to the park by his house and order seafood from the restaurant there. When we're not in the mood for that, we bring freshly baked bread (Ian makes it) and various cheeses and fruit. I made a new picnic blanket last summer that's just big enough for two people. We haven't picnicked yet this year but we will soon!

Flickr Inspiration

When I saw this Courthouse Steps quilt on Sew, Mama, Sew I couldn't believe my eyes. What a beautiful, ethereal work of art. I contacted Chawne (cauchy09 on flickr) and she shared some information about her inspiring quilt. Read on, readers!

Back in 2005, my mother mailed me a giant box of these pants she'd been collecting at my request. I always knew I wanted to try to make utility quilts but it can be a challenge to gather up enough discarded fabrics, especially if you want them to be fabrics and quilts with meaning. Seeing the range of colors and patinas in the fabrics reminded me of this stunning Gee's Bend quilt ( this one) and so I made my own version.

I should mention that this courthouse steps quilt was the second one that i made from that supply of pants. The first one was entirely improvisational--my first improvisational project, in fact. The two quilts are meant to be companions to represent many dichotomies in my family: black/white, rich/poor, blue-collar/white-collar, religious/atheist, liberal/conservative, slave/freedman, etc.

Picnic Blanket

Good morning everyone! I'm sad to say that this is our last project tutorial for Round 2. But! Jennifer and I are cooking up some new ideas for the near (and not quite so near) future that we hope you'll like just as much.

But, for now, today's project is a sweet and simple picnic blanket:

The finished size is 5' square, big enough for a proper picnic or to cuddle up in on a cool summer night. You don't need batting or binding for this blanket but I do recommend flannel for the backing. It adds weight and warmth and softness.

Materials:

Four - 12.5" (unfinished) quilt blocks

Fabric for top:

at least 2.5 yards* (3 yards if you will use this fabric in your blocks)

*This measurement is pretty exact so if you plan to prewash your fabric, make sure you have a little extra yardage. Also, sometimes fabric isn't cut straight and you could lose a few inches that way. To cut most efficiently, it's best to use a non-directional fabric. If you use a directional fabric, you will need more yardage.

Cut your top fabric as follows:

Four - 2.5" x 12.5"
Four - 2.5" x 14.5"
Two - 14.5" x 32.5"
One - 32.5" x 60.5"

For your backing fabric:
I used Amy Butler's flannel for the back of this blanket (it's super soft). The back should measure 60.5" x 60.5"*

*If you want to use all one fabric you will need just over 2.5 yards cut using the diagram below:

One - 41" x 60.5"
Two - 20" x 30.5"

Step 1: Assemble the top. Add one 2.5" x 12.5" strip to each of the four blocks.

Add one 2.5" x 14.5" to a side adjacent to the first strip.

Place a block on either side of the 14.5" x 32.5" piece and sew together. Make sure a 2.5" strip is on the outside edge (opposite the large piece in the middle.) Repeat with the other two blocks.

Arrange your strips and sew together to complete the top. Make sure the 2.5" strips are on the outside edge of the blanket.

Step 2: Assemble the back:

Sew your two smaller pieces together along the 20" edge using a 1/4" seam. Sew this to your larger piece to complete the back.

Step 3: Assemble the blanket. Place the top and backing, right sides together.

Pin and sew around all sides using a 1/4" seam. Leave an opening that's at least 8". Turn the blanket through the opening and press edges flat.

Topstitch around the edge of the blanket.

Quilt as desired.

Martha Washington Star

This block is named for the first First Lady of the United States. According to her biography at US History.org, she seemed to be a beautiful but uncomplicated woman. Maybe that's why this block is named after her.

As usual, 12" block measurements are listed first with 8" block measurements in parenthesis. Before you start, make sure to check out the Flying Geese Tutorial to refresh your memory on our fast and easy flying geese method. The math is done for you, but it's necessary to be familiar with the steps of construction (they are not shown here).

Step 1: Cut as follows.
Light

Cut 1 7 1/4"square (8" block -- 5 1/4").
Cut 1 4 1/4" square (8" block -- 3 1/4"). Divide into 4 quarter-square triangles.
Cut 2 3 7/8" squares (8" block -- 2 7/8"). Divide each into 2 half-square triangles.
Cut 4 3 1/2" squares (8" block -- 2 1/2").

Medium

Cut 1 4 1/4" square (8" block -- 2 1/2"). Divide into 4 quarter-square triangles.

Dark

Cut 4 3 7/8" squares (8" block -- 2 7/8").

Step 2: Using your large light square and your 4 dark squares, create four flying geese using the easy flying geese method. Remember that your pieces are already cut to size for this method; all you need to do is follow the steps listed to create your geese.

Step 3: Join your medium and light quarter square triangles using a 1/4" seam. Make sure to join triangles together on the short side, and be consistent about your layout. Press seams. When you have finished, all pieced triangles should look identical.

Step 4: Join your remaining half-square triangles to the triangle units constructed in Step 2. This time, sew on the long side. Be sure to use a 1/4" seam. Press seams. You will now have four squares.

Step 5: Create a pinwheel by joining your squares from Step 4. Sew using a 1/4" seam. Press seams. You now have the cutest pinwheel ever.

Step 6: Lay out your pieces and join as shown. Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams. You're done!

In my four years of quilting, I finished twelve quilts and I only kept three! My favorite is the quilt I sort of accidentally made for a giveaway on my blog last year.

Quilted Wall Hanging

Today's project is a quilted wall hanging. Of course, I know you all know how to make a mini quilt. I just thought it would be nice to show you my favorite way to create nearly invisible hanging tabs.

Materials

One 12.5" (unfinished quilt block)

Background Fabric:
12.5" x 2.5"
12.5" x 5.5"
19.5" x 3.5"
19.5" x 9.5"

Cotton Batting: 20.5" x 25.5"
Backing Fabric: 21.5" x 26.5"
Binding: 3 strips cut selvedge to selvedge (I cut mine 2.5" wide but next time I'll cut my usual 2.75")

For Tabs: cut two 3.5" x 5.5"

Step 1: Assemble the top.

Sew the 12.5" x 2.5" fabric strip to one side of block. Sew the 12.5" x 5.5" strip to the opposite side.

Press open. Sew the two 19.5" pieces to opposite sides of the block.

Press and trim to 19.5" x 24.5"

Step 2: Layer backing fabric, batting and top, pin and quilt as desired.

Step 3: Now we'll assemble the tabs.

Fold your tab fabric so the long edges meet. Sew a 1/4" seam.

Press the seam open and then turn tube inside out. Press flat with the seam centered.

Decide which edge will be the top of your quilt. Fold the tab in half (with the seam on the inside) and pin so that the unfinished edges line up with the edge of the quilt

Step 4: Bind your quilt. When you turn it over, you'll see that the tabs are now sewn to the quilt.

Hand stitch (or machine stitch) the binding to the back. When you get to the tabs, sew through the tabs and into the quilt if you can.

To finish the tabs, place a dowel under both layers of the tabs and mark where the edge should go.

Whip stitch the edge in place.

Insert the dowel again and it's ready to hang anywhere.

If your quilt is larger, place more tabs along the top edge to keep everything looking crisp and neat.

Love in a Mist

I love blocks that look complicated but are actually very easy, don't you? I looked long and hard for a block like this and I think I have a new favorite! But I say that about every block, don't I?

To make a 12.5" (unfinished) block:
From your focus fabric:
cut four - 2.5" x 2.5"
cut twelve - 3" x 3"

From your background fabric:
cut four - 2.5" x 2.5"
cut twelve - 3" x 3"
cut one - 4.5" x 4.5"

(sorry for all the white on white)

Fist we'll make 24 half square triangle blocks. Pair one 3" focus fabric with one 3" background fabric. Mark the diagonal, sew 1/4" on either side of the line, cut and press. Trim to 2.5"

Lay out your block and sew pieces into sets of four:

Sew into rows:

Sew rows together to complete the block.

Hand Quilted Embroidery Hoop

Today's project is a great way to display smaller quilt blocks as art. It's also super easy and a fun way to practice your hand quilting/embroidery skills on a small scale.

Materials:

1 - 6.5" (unfinished) quilt block
1 - 12.5" x 12.5" piece of fabric (I used linen but cotton would be nice too)
1 - 6" x 6" piece of cotton batting
1 - 10" wooden embroidery hoop
embroidery floss (or your favorite hand-quilting thread)

This project can be accomplished in three easy steps. Step 1: stretch your background fabric nice and tight in the hoop.

Step 2: center your batting and quilt block and pin in place.

Step 3: quilt/embroider.

Since the fabric is so tight in the hoop, you won't be able to "rock the needle" like you would with regular hand quilting. Instead, an embroidered running stitch will work just fine.

If you're not a hand quilter or if you prefer the look of machine quilting, start with step 2 and finish with step 1. Either way, you'll be left with a piece of art that can be changed out whenever you feel like it.

Magic Cross

Magic Cross is a fun and simple block. I especially like this block because it's reminiscent of a star block, without messing with all those flying geese. The devil is in the details, though, so make sure that you at least read the whole step before sewing. Otherwise, keep your seam ripper handy! As always, measurements for the 12" block are listed first, with 8" measurements listed in parenthesis.

Step 1: Cut as follows

Fabric A (light background)

Cut 1 7 1/4" square (8" block -- 5 1/4"). Divide into four quarter-square triangles.
Cut 2 3 7/8" squares (8" block -- 2 7/8"). Divide each into half-square triangles.
Cut 1 4 3/4" square (8" block -- 3 3/8").

Fabric B (focus fabric, traditionally medium)

Cut 1 7 1/4" square (8" block -- 5 1/4"). Divide into four quarter-square triangles.
Cut 2 3 7/8" squares (8" block -- 2 7/8"). Divide each into half-square triangles.

Fabric C (secondary fabric, traditionally dark)

Cut 2 3 7/8" square (8" block -- 2 7/8"). Divide each into half-square triangles.

Step 2: Using a 1/4" seam, sew each small Fabric A triangle to each small Fabric B triangles. Make sure that your Fabric B triangle is on the left for each set. Press seams.

Step 3: Again using a 1/4" seam, attach each remaining Fabric B triangle to the units you just built in Step 2. Press seams. These are the points of your Magic Cross.

Step 4: Find your 4 3/4" square (the only one we didn't divide into triangles). Attach one of the "points" to either side of this block. Use a 1/4" seam when sewing and press when complete.

Step 5: Attach your remaining light triangles to each side of your two leftover points. Make sure to attach your triangles on the short side, leaving the long side as the outside edge. Press seams. You will have two complete units when finished.

Step 6: Join your rows together. Press seams. You now have a hexagon.

Step 7: Using a 1/4" seam, attach your Fabric C triangles to this hexagon. Make sure to sew those triangles on where they belong! You should be adding some corners to the short segments of the hexagon. When pressed, you'll have a complete block.

Step 8: Press seams. You're done!

Petite Drawstring Bag

I really like the idea of giving gifts in bags. I like that the wrapping is reusable and it can match the gift. (I like things to match.)

Today's project is a petite drawstring bag. The finished size is 8.5" x 6".

Materials:
One 6.5" (unfinished) quilt block. We used the Forest Paths block.

11.5" x 6.5" piece of fabric
2.5" x 6.5" piece of fabric

19.5" x 6.5" fabric for lining

Approximately 1 yard ribbon
16" ric-rac (optional)

Lay out your fabric in the following order: 2.5" fabric, block, 11.5" fabric

Sew together with 1/4" seams to finish the outside of the bag:

Pin the bag outside to the bag lining, right sides together.

Sew around all edges using a 1/4" seam. Leave a gap of 3", backstitching at the opening.

Turn bag through the opening and press all edges.

To make the casing for the drawstring, fold over the short edge to the inside, 1".

Repeat with the other short edge. Pin in place.

Sew along the bottom of the folded edges, backstitching at the beginning and end.

If you want to quilt your bag, now is your chance.

To finish the bag, fold in half (lining on the inside) and pin in place. If you want to add ric-rac, place it in at the edges before you pin. Your ric-rac should end at the stitching line for the casing (approx 7.5" from the bottom of the bag). The top of the bag is at the bottom of the picture...sorry for the confusing angle.

Topstitch the two long sides, backstitching at the top and bottom. DO NOT sew above the stitching line for the casing. If you do, you won't be able to insert a drawstring.

Cut your ribbon in half and insert one length through the front casing and continue through the back casing. Your ribbon will end where it started.

Repeat with the second ribbon, starting at the opposite side of the bag. Your ribbon will be folded like in this picture...only inside the casing.

When you have both ribbons in place, pull both ends evenly and tie a knot at each end. If you don't want your knots to show, slide them around until they're inside the casing.

Fill your bag with treats and enjoy!

Forest Paths

I know some of you are participating in one (or more) pinwheel quilt-alongs right now so I hope you don't mind one more pinwheel block. This block was so perfect for tomorrow's project that I couldn't pass it up. Hopefully you'll agree.

To make a 12" block:
Fabric A - cut two 5" x 5"
Fabric B - cut two 5" x 5"
cut four - 2.5 "x 2.5"
Fabric C - cut four 2.5" x 8.5"

*This week's project tutorial requires a 6" block*
Fabric A - cut two 3" x 3"
Fabric B - cut two 3" x 3"
cut four - 1.5" x 1.5"
Fabric C - cut four 1.5" x 4.5"

First we'll make some half square triangles using the Fabric A and B squares:

Trim to 4.5" (2.5" for a 6" block), arrange your half square triangles into a pinwheel and sew together:

Lay out the rest of your pieces and sew together into rows:

Sew your rows together to complete the block. Trim to 12.5" (6.5") if necessary.

Travel Checkers

Today's project is my absolute favorite. I've wanted to make a fabric checker board for a while but I was put off by the idea of needing a separate bag to put everything in for travel.

This board is double sided and one of the edges is left open, creating a generous pocket to store the game pieces, magazines, coloring books, etc.

Just stash everything inside and roll up for travel.

Materials:
1 - 12.5" (unfinished) block, we used the Hither and Yon block
In the future, instead of using a quilt block, I'd make another type of game board...like backgammon or tic-tac-toe (9-patch!)

For the Checker Board:
4 - 2" x 16.5" strips of dark fabric
4 - 2" x 16.5" strips of light fabric

For the sashing/border:
2 - 1.5" x 12.5" strips
1 - 2.5" x 12.5" strip
2 - 1.5" x 28.5" strips

For the lining:
1 - 14.5" x 28.5"

For ties:
6 - 15" pieces of ribbon (2.5 YDS) (these will be a little on the long side and you can trim them later if you want)

For the fabric covered checkers:
Fabric scraps in light and dark
Pliers
Hot glue/gun (optional)
Cover Button Kit (7/8" size) - you will need a total of 24 buttons. You can buy the refill kit which has more buttons for a better price but be sure to buy one pack that has the white and blue assembling device.

Step 1: Assemble your checker board. To start, lay out your 2"x16.5" strips, alternating light and dark:

Sew all your strips together until you have one piece measuring 12.5"x16.5"

Cut your new block into eight 2" strips. Lay them out, turning every other row the opposite direction.

Sew all your rows together (I find that pressing all seams open makes for a smoother checker board). When you're finished, square up and trim to 12.5"x 12.5" if necessary.

Step 2: Now we will assemble the outside of the game board/bag. Sew your pieces together in the following order: 1.5"x12.5" sashing, checker board, 2.5"x12.5" sashing, quilt block, 1.5"x12.5" sashing.

Sew your two remaining sashing pieces (1.5"x28.5") to the top and bottom.

Trim to 14.5"x28.5" if necessary.

Step 3: Now we'll put everything together. First, place three lengths of ribbon (right side down) onto the short end of the game board and pin in place. Make sure there is a half inch overhang at the edge. Repeat on the other end of the game board.

Place your game board and lining fabric right sides together. Make sure your ribbons are tucked inside (and away from the edges).

Sew around all edges (1/4" from edge) leaving a 6" opening on one of the long sides.

Turn and press all edges.

Topstitch the two short sides only.

If you want to do any quilting to the board or the quilt block, now is your chance.

When you're finished, fold your game board in half (lining together) and pin along all edges.

Topstitch around the three remaining sides to create the bag. (Don't sew around the edge that contains the ribbons as this is the opening for your bag. Also, keep track of the ribbons so you don't accidentally sew over them.)

Step 4: Make your checkers! (You can skip this step if you already have checkers you'd like to use.)

Remove the little button loop from all 24 buttons. You can squeeze them with a pliers and they come right off. Next, using the template on the back of the box, cut 12 light fabric circles and 12 dark fabric circles.

Follow the directions on the back of the package to make your buttons.

I like to fill the backs of my checkers with hot glue. This gives the checkers a bit more weight and (if you fill them to the very brim) helps them grip the board.

Step 5: Play checkers!

And when you're finished, tuck your checkers inside the bag, roll it up and tie your ribbons to secure.

For a day of travel, this bag is also a great place to store things that can roll up like magazines and coloring books.

Hither and Yon

This block is a doozy. I ripped a lot of seams while working this tutorial. As you all know, I'm making 8" finished blocks for a Christmas quilt. Unfortunately, the 8" version of this block has some strange measurements, and so we're not able to use any of the easy piecing methods we've learned.

As always, I'm listing the measurements for 12" finished blocks with 8" measurements in parenthesis. If you're too scared of triangles, check this tutorial to make a 12" finished block using easy piecing methods. If you're making 8" finished blocks, you're stuck with this!

Fabric Requirements
Fabric A: light
Fabric B: medium
Fabric C: dark

Step 1: Cut as follows:
Fabric A

Cut two 4 1/4" (8" block -- 3 1/4") squares. Divide each into 4 quarter-square triangles to get 8 total triangles.
Cut six 3 7/8" (8" block -- 2 7/8") squares. Divide each into 2 half-square triangles to get 12 total triangles.

Fabric B

Cut one 3 7/8" (8" block -- 2 7/8") square. Divide into 2 half-square triangles.
Cut one 4 3/4" (8" block -- 3 3/8") square.

Fabric C

Cut two 4 1/4" (8" block -- 3 1/4") squares. Divide each into 4 quarter-square triangles to get 8 total triangles.
Cut three 3 7/8" (8" block -- 2 7/8") squares. Divide each into half-square triangles to get 6 total triangles.

Step 2: Join each of your smallest light triangles to your smallest dark triangles. You will have 8 half-square triangle blocks.

Step 3: Use the half-square triangle blocks you just created in step 2 to create two pinwheel blocks.

Step 4: Join your remaining light and dark triangles together to create 6 half-square triangle blocks. Set your remaining light triangles to the side.

Step 5: This is where it gets complicated. Join three half-square triangle blocks, two remaining light triangles, and one dark triangle together as shown in the pictures. Make sure to add the dark triangle to each section last. When you're finished, you'll have one large patchwork triangle.

Step 6: Follow the same sewing process from step 5 to create another large patchwork triangle. Press seams.

Step 7: You now have two light triangles, two pinwheels, and your center square unsewn. Sew the long side of one triangle to the top of a pinwheel. Sew this unit to the dark center square. Then, add another pinwheel and end with the remaining triangle. You now have one strip of patchwork to make up for the middle of your block. Press seams as desired. (Sorry for no picture, I forgot to take one!)

Step 8: Sew your three sections together and press seams as desired.

This little rice bag makes me super happy. I put a lot of time and effort into making these tutorials. And before that, it takes a lot of mental trial and error before I even start working things up in fabric. So, to know someone liked one of my projects enough to make one of their own...well, that's just so cool!

Catch-up Week

Hi everyone! As you can see, Jennifer and I are running a bit behind this week. We've decided to cut our losses and declare this a "catch up" week...for us and, if you're quilting along with us, for you.

I'm finishing up the last few Mod projects and cutting fabric for two new quilts and making raw edge applique throw pillows.

Table Runner

I wanted to see what would happen when I put two or more quatrefoil blocks together...but I didn't have enough time to make an entire quilt. So, today's project is a simple table runner. While I'd still like to use this block in a quilt, I like the simple pattern made by the three flowers together.

Materials:

3 - 12.5" (unfinished) blocks (directions for the Quatrefoil block here)
2 - 12.5" x 3.5" fabric for border
2 - 3.5" x width of fabric (at least 42.5") for border

20" x 45" piece of fabric for the back of the table runner (I don't usually have fabric leftover that measures 45" so I like to piece the back...)
19" x 44" cotton batting
4 - 2.75" x width of fabric (selvedge to selvedge) for binding.

Step 1: First we'll assemble the top. Arrange your three blocks and sew them together in a row. Then sew the 12.5" strips to both of the 12.5" long sides.

Sew the 42.5" strips to the remaining two sides.

Trim to 18.5" x 42.5"

Step 2: If you are piecing a back for the table runner, make sure you end up with a piece that is larger than the front...around 20x45.

Step 3: Assemble your layers. Stack the backing fabric right side down, a layer of quilt batting and your top right side up.

Pin and quilt as desired.

Step 4: Bind your table runner. I didn't get pictures of this step because it's the same as in the potholder tutorial. The only difference is that you'll need to sew your four binding pieces together to make one long piece before you start.

Hand or machine stitch the binding to finish.

Quatrefoil

Good morning everyone! It's so very early, isn't it? I don't mean to complain about daylight savings time but it's hard to be cheerful about it when I'm so tired.

But, something that did make me happy despite the tiredness, was seeing John's post about our little blog. I'm definitely a Quilt Dad fan, aren't you?

So, welcome to everyone who's here because of his recommendation. You've picked a good day because this is the block we're making this week:

This is definitely one of my favorite blocks. I'm not actually into flowers but for some reason, the pointy "petals" really appeal to me.

Materials

1 - 4.5" x 4.5" (for center)
4 - 4.5" x 4.5" (for "petals")
4 - 2.5" x 2.5" (accent color 1)
4 - 2.5" x 2.5" (accent color 2)
8 - 2.5" x 2.5" (background color)
1 - 2.5" x 21" or longer (background color)

Step 1: First we'll construct our four patches. Place your 2.5" accent squares onto the long strip of background fabric. Leave a sliver of space between the squares.

Sew your strip using a 1/4" seam.

Cut your squares apart.

Press each pair open (trim edge if necessary) and place together in opposite pairs.

Sew together and trim to 4.5".

Repeat to make three more 4-patch blocks.

Step 2: Now we'll assemble our "petals". Draw a diagonal line on the backs of your 2.5" background squares. Place one on your petal fabric and sew along (or just to the right) of the line.

Trim 1/4" away from the line and press open.

Place another background square on an adjacent side and repeat.

Trim to 4.5". Repeat to make three more petals.

Step 3: Arrange your pieces and assemble your block:

Trim to 12.5".

In case you're wondering, this week's project tutorial requires three 12.5" Quatrefoil blocks. Also, I forgot to take a fancy picture of the finished block so you get a sneak peek of tomorrow's project. I'm excited to show you because I love how it turned out. Stay tuned...

Antique Quilts 2010

Look what I found in my Google Reader: Antique Quilts 2010 from Better Homes and Gardens. Anina posted about it just today.

This magazine takes 22 traditional antique quilt patterns and remakes them into modern quilts. This is right up our alley! Does anyone have this magazine? What are the projects like? Are there any blocks in there that we've already learned how to make and experimented with?

A Pillow Cover with Pockets

I know it's been done many times before but I just couldn't resist making a pillow cover for one of our tutorials. There are some blocks that just beg to be made on a larger scale and when Jennifer picked the Corner Star block, I knew just what I'd do with it.

And the best thing (in my opinion anyway) is the back of the pillow. It's made with a men's button up shirt with pockets!

This will fit an 18" pillow.

To make this pillow cover, you will need:

1 - 16.5" (unfinished) block (we used the Corner Star)
2 - 16.5" x 1.75" strips for the border (Just so you know, I always cut my strips a little longer...so I cut mine at 17"))
2 - 19" x 1.75" strips for the border (19.5" if you want.)
1 - 19" x 19" fabric for lining (I used white so it wouldn't show through to the front of the pillow)
1 - large men's shirt with a chest measurement of at least 19".

Step 1: Assemble your pillow front. Take your border strips and arrange them so your 16.5" strips are opposite each other.

Sew using 1/4" seam and press towards the border. Finish all four sides and square to 19" if necessary.

Place your block onto the lining fabric, wrong sides together. Pin along the edges and at various places within the block.

Quilt as desired

Step 2: Assemble the pillow back. I like to start by cutting the sleeves and collar off the shirt. Then I separate the front pieces from the back. Before cutting out the panel, I like to topstitch the opening of the shirt to keep things flat. If you turn the opening over, you'll see two edges that need to be sewn (4 total). I marked them with pins in this picture.

Stitch as close to these edges as you can. Be careful around the buttons.

Button the shirt and with the buttons centered, cut a panel that measures 19" x 19".

Step 3: Now we'll assemble the pillow cover. Place the front of the pillow right side up and center the back of the pillow, right side down.

Pin all edges and sew a 1/2" seam. I like to backstitch when I get to the places where the shirt overlaps itself.

Trim the corners and serge (or zigzag) the edges.

Unbutton the back and turn the pillow cover right side out.

Press the edges so they're nice and crisp.

Turn over and admire your work.

Stuff in an 18" pillow and button the back (or leave it unbuttoned if your pillow is too fluffy)

Corner Star

Sorry for being tardy to the party. I'm not usually the one to make a fashionably late entrance, but this block boggled my mind for longer than usual.

The Corner Star block is made up of flying geese and square in a square units. If you've been quilting along with us, this will be a piece of cake for you!

This tutorial lists measurements for a 16" block, since that's what we'll need for our project this week. Measurements for the 8" block are written in parenthesis. If you need 12" measurements, just ask!

Fabric Requirements:

Fabric A (patterned or solid)
Fabric B (patterned or solid, but different from A)
Fabric C (for background)

Step 1 - Cut fabric as follows

Fabric A: Cut 16 2.5" squares (8" block -- 1.5")(12" block -- 2")

Fabric B: Cut 16 2.5" squares (8" block -- 1.5")(12" block -- 2")

Fabric C:

Cut 9 4.5" squares (8" block -- 2.5")(12" block -- 3.5")
Cut 4 2.5" squares (8" block -- 1.5")(12" block -- 2")
Cut 12 2.5" x 4.5" rectangles (8" block -- 1.5" x 2.5")(12" block -- 2" x 3.5")

Step 2 - Mark a diagonal line across the back of all Fabric A and Fabric B 2.5" squares. Line up four squares of each fabric with a Fabric C rectangle. Sew on the marked line.

Step 3 - Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and press seams as desired. At this point you will have 8 units.

Step 4 - Repeat step two. Trim and press seam allowances. At this point you have 8 flying geese units.

Step 5 - Set aside four 4.5" background squares along with the remaining patterned fabric squares. Align blocks as shown in the photo. Fabric A and Fabric B should be placed in diagonal corners. Sew on the marked line. Press seams and trim as desired. Create four units.

Step 6 - Align remaining squares just as you did in step 5. Sew on the marked line. Press seams and trim as desired. Create four units.

Step 7 - Lay out all pieces as shown. Check to be sure that star points are reaching outward.

Step 8 - Join pieces together as shown. Press seams in opposite directions.

Step 9 - Get the steam ready! Press your block into submission.

Step 10 - Admire and add your photo to our flickr group!

Check out that fussy cutting! I've seen her fabric and the design she chose for this block isn't actually the main focus pattern. It's a secondary design created by the pattern repeat.

It reminds me that there's potential for fussy cutting even when it's not obvious right away. I get pretty annoyed when I don't have enough fabric left to fussy cut the main design but I need to remember that there are other designs that can be just as, if not more, stunning. Fantastic job, Jen!

This is my favorite but the other four are beautiful (and sassy!) as well.

This is such a flexible block, as Amber demonstrated. Visiting our flickr group is definitely my favorite part of this project. I love seeing how different fabrics and the use of light and dark can change a block so completely. So, don’t be shy…even if you make just one block, add it to the pool!

You know, it's funny...I've seen our tutorials pop up here and there and every time I do, I just sort of stare in disbelief. I can see that there are lots of people following the blog but I still can't believe people are actually reading it. And, you know, making blocks! And telling friends! It's just so satisfying (and kind of terrifying) and Jennifer and I have you all to thank.

A "Dandy" Little Tote Bag

Today's project is a tiny tote bag...an "I'm going to read books under a shady tree" bag or, if you're like me, an "I can't fit all this stuff in my purse but I need to bring everything with me wherever I go" bag. Either way, I hope you enjoy making this quick little tote.

Materials
1 - 12.5" (unfinished) quilt block (we used the Dandy block)
1 - 12.5" x 12.5" piece of coordinating fabric for the back panel (you can use another quilt block if you want both sides to match)
2 - 12.5" x 3.5" for the accent
2 - 12.5" x 15.5" fabric for the lining
2 - 19" x 4" for the straps

Step 1: Assemble the outer layer of the tote. Using a 1/4" seam, sew a 12.5"x3.5" strip to the unfinished quilt block and the plain back piece. If you're using a directional print, make sure this strip goes on the top:

Place your front and back together, matching up the seam and edges.

Sew around the two sides and the bottom using a 1/4" seam. Backstitch at the beginning and end for extra strength. Once you're finished, trim the bottom two corners to reduce bulk and, if you want, iron your seam open (to give the edge a crisper look).

Turn right-side out and press to get a nice crease.

Step 2: Assemble your lining. Place your lining pieces right sides together and sew around the two sides and the bottom using a 1/4" seam. When you get to the bottom seam, leave a 3"-4" gap. Backstitch at the beginning and end for extra strength. Once you're finished, trim the bottom two corners to reduce bulk.

Don't turn the lining at this point.

Step 3: Now we'll make the handles. Take your 19" strip of fabric and press in half down the entire length.

Fold in each side and press again

Fold again on the center line and press. Your strip will measure 19" x 1".

Topstitch the edges of your handles, staying as close to the edge as you can. I find that increasing the stitch length makes for a nicer topstitch.

Step 4: Now we'll assemble the bag. Place your handle so the ends are 1/2" past the edge of the bag and the sides are 3.25" from each the side of the bag. Pin in place (I find that two pins help keep the strap from pivoting). Also, make sure your strap isn't twisted. Repeat on the other side.

Place the outside of the bag into the bag lining (right sides will be together).

Move things around until the side seams line up and the top edge lines up. Pin in place.

Sew 1/4" from the edge. I like to backstitch over the handles for strength.

Pull your bag out through the hole in the bottom of the lining.

Sew the hole in the lining shut and tuck your lining into the bag.

Press and topstitch the opening for strength and to give it a finished look.

Admire your finished tote:

The Dandy

This week's block is one of my all-time favorites. First, the name is just too good to be true and second, it's nearly impossible to screw it up. The points on the star don't have to match up with anything...they just float there looking all pointy and perfect. Try it, you might like it!

To make a 12" block you will need:

Fabric A: cut 2 - 5" x 5"
Fabric B: cut 2 - 5" x 5", cut 5 - 4.5" 4.5"
Fabric C: cut 8 - 2.5" x 2.5"

Step 1: Make some half square triangles! Mark a diagonal line on the back of two 5" squares. Pair one of fabric A and one of Fabric B, right sides together.

Sew 1/4" on either side of the line.

Cut along the line.

Press open and trim to 4.5"

Step 2: Now we'll make our star. Choose one of your 4.5" squares to be the center of your block. Set this one aside and lay out your remaining 4 squares. Draw a diagonal line on the back of your Fabric C squares. Place one Fabric C onto the corner of your Fabric B square:

Sew along the line (I find that sewing a smidge to the right of the line helps my block turn out better.)

Trim 1/4" away from your seam and press triangle to the side.

Place another Fabric C square on an adjacent corner and sew along the line:

Trim and press open.

Step 3:Arrange your pieces:

Sew into rows:

And sew the rows together to finish the block:

See? Easy! And in case you're wondering, this week's project will require a 12" block.

So, today I'm wondering...are you a night person or a morning person? I am most definitely a morning person. In one morning hour I can accomplish something that would take three evening hours. I usually don't get anything important done after 9pm. In fact, just about the only thing that can keep me up late is finishing a quilt. I try to sew the binding by hand all in one night...you know, because I'm impatient like that. How about you?

Rice Heating Bag and Removable Cover

I really love today's project because it's cute and (in my world) very useful after a long night of sewing. Today we'll be making a rice heating bag with a removable cover.

Just warm it in the microwave to help relax those aching shoulder muscles.

For the removable cover, you'll need:

One 12.5"x12.5" (unfinished) quilt block (we used the Sunshine block)
One 12.5"x12.5" piece of cotton fabric (for lining)

For the rice bag, you'll need:

One 12.5"x12" piece of cotton fabric
2.25 - 3 cups of rice. (I'm not a rice expert so I recommend raiding your cupboard for whatever you have on hand. Probably not instant rice, though.)

Step 1: First we'll make the removable cover. Place your block and your lining fabric right sides together.

Pin to keep everything in place.

Sew 1/4" from all sides, leaving a 3" to 4" opening on one side.

To get a nice, sharp edge, I like to press back the bulky edges of the block. Run the iron along to set the crease. Also, trim the corners to reduce bulk...make sure not to cut your stitches.

Turn everything right side out.

Use a knitting needle or similar to get the corners nice and pointy.

Iron your block flat.

Pick one side to be the opening of your bag and sew 1/4" (or less) from the edge, backstitching at the beginning and end.

Quilt your block as desired.

Fold your block in half, making sure that the side you picked for your opening is along one of the shorter sides. Pin your two remaining edges in place.

Sew along the edges using a 1/4" seam, backstitching at the beginning and end. You'll be sewing through a lot of layers (I had to pull it through my machine when I got to the bulky seams) so, sorry in advance...

Give your finished bag a good press and set aside:

Step 2: Now we'll make the rice bag. Take your 12.5 x 12" piece of fabric and fold it in half, right sides together. It should now measure 12.5" x 6".

Sew a 1/4" seam up both of the short sides, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam.

Turn your bag right side out and use a knitting needle to make the corners pointy.

Iron your bag flat.

Turn the opening in 1/2" and press to set the crease.

Measure 4" from both of the short sides and mark with a pencil. You will see these lines after sewing so make them as light as you can.

Sew along the pencil lines, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam.

Sew along the bottom edge of the bag, 1/4" away from the edge, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam.

Pour 3/4 to 1 cup of rice into each pocket. I use a funnel or else the rice gets all over.

Pin the pockets closed, making sure to pin close to the rice. You'll want to give yourself as much room as possible along the edge.

Sew 1/4" from the edge, backstitching at the beginning and the end of the seam.

Remove pins and shake the rice into place.

Tuck the rice pack into the bag and you're done!

To heat, place only the rice pack in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. I like to shake the rice and flip the pack over every 30 seconds until it's nice and toasty. The rice WILL burn if overheated so be careful. Not only is it bad in general but it'll stink up your house worse than burned microwave popcorn.

Sunshine

I love the look of this block-- it's similar to Sawtooth and Bear's Paw blocks, but just unique enough. You can make this block using one, two, or four medium or dark focus fabrics plus a light fabric for the background. My block uses four focus fabrics; if you want to use less, just adjust your cutting instructions as needed.

Just like last time, measurements given are for a 12" block. Measurements for an 8" block are listed in parentheses.

Step 1 - Cut fabrics as follows.

From your light fabric cut:

1 of 6 7/8" square (8" block -- 4 3/4").
8 of 2 3/8" squares (8" block -- 1 7/8")
4 of 2" squares (8" block -- 1 1/2")
1 of 4 1/4" square. Divide into quarter square triangles. (8" block -- 3 1/4")

From each Focus Fabric cut:

1 of 5 3/8" square. Divide into half-square triangles. Save half of each, put the other half in your scraps bin. (8" block -- 3 7/8")
3 of 2 3/8" squares. (8" block -- 1 7/8")

Note: These instructions are for four focus fabrics. If you are using two focus fabrics, multiply the amount cut from each fabric by 2. If you are using one focus fabric, multiply the amount cut from each fabric by 4.

Step 2 - Sew two of your large triangles to opposite sides of your 6 7/8" square. Press seams as desired.

Step 3 - Attach the two remaining large triangles to the open sides of the square to create a square in a square block. Press seams as desired.

Step 4 - Take 8 2 3/8" squares from your light fabrics. Mark each with a diagonal line. Pin to 2 each of your 2 3/8" focus fabric squares. Sew 1/4" from either side of your marked line. Chain piece if desired.

Step 5 - Cut in half on the diagonal line. Press seams as desired. You now have 16 half square triangle units.

Step 6 - Cut your remaining 2 3/8" focus fabric into half square triangles.

Step 7 - Sew one half square triangle of each focus fabric to each of your light quarter square triangles. Make sure to match your pieces as shown. Press seams as desired.

Step 8 - Lay out your square in a square block. Match your pieces from Step 7 as shown in the photo.

Step 9 - Take your remaining focus fabric triangles and complete your layout.

Step 10 - Complete your flying geese. Be sure to line up your pieces correctly and double check your layout. Press seams as desired.

Step 11 - Using a 1/4" seam, join remaining pieces together following the process shown in the photos. Press seams as desired.

I'm trying to think about what I was doing at 12 and I'm pretty sure it was nothing as cool as this. I'm beyond thrilled to meet such a young and inspiring quilter. I love how quilting brings so many people together, young and old and in-between...how we all share a common bond, a common history. We may belong to different generations but we all belong to the same family. We are all quilters.

So with that, I say fantastic job, SuperGirl! Thank you for letting us feature your quilt today!

Apron Tutorial

This week's project is one of my favorites...a double sided apron:

These aprons are so fast and easy because the base is a pre-hemmed tea towel.

Interested?

Materials:

1 large tea towel (mine measures 33"x38" and I buy them here) If you don't want to buy a pre-made towel, you can use a similarly dimensioned piece of fabric. Just be sure to finish the edges before you start making the apron.)

For the pocket
-1 6.5"x6.5" (unfinished) quilt block (we used the Shoofly block)
-1 1.5"x6.5" strip of quilting cotton
-1 2"x6.5" strip of quilting cotton
-1 9"x6.5" piece of quilting cotton for the pocket lining (I used white to match the towel but a patterned fabric would add extra awesomeness)

For the stripe: 1 piece of quilting cotton 4"x36" (if you are using a different sized towel, the length of this strip is (length of towel)+3")

For the sash: 2 pieces of quilting cotton cut selvedge to selvedge (40"-42") x 6"

Step 1: First we'll make and attach the pocket. To make the outside of your pocket, sew your two fabric strips on opposite sides of your 6.5" block:

Sew your pocket front and your pocket lining, right sides together (1/4" from all sides). Leave a few inches open on one end so you can turn your block. Trim corners to reduce bulk.

Turn your block using a knitting needle or similar...try to get your corners pointy:

Iron your pocket so it's nice and flat.

Sew along the top edge of your pocket (the 1" strip), keeping close to the edge.

Iron your tea towel and fold it in half (wrong sides together) so it measures 33"x19". Iron the crease.

Now, place your pocket wherever you like. I like to hold the towel up (with the fold at my waist) to see where my hand would naturally look for a pocket. When you have the pocket in the correct position (and make sure it's not crooked), pin in place. Make sure you only pin it to one layer of your apron:

Sew the pocket to the apron on three sides, leaving the top open (again, make sure you're sewing only one layer of towel). Make sure to run your machine back and forth a few times at the top of the pocket (for strength).

Step 2: I like to decorate the other side of my aprons with a strip of fabric. If you don't want to do this, skip ahead to step 3.

My favorite way to get a super straight fabric strip is to use freezer paper.

Cut a piece of freezer paper 36x3". Place your fabric strip wrong side up and place your freezer paper on top, shiny side down. Try to center your freezer paper and iron it in place:

Using your paper as a guide, carefully turn your edges over and iron to make a crease:

When you finish ironing both edges, pull out your freezer paper strip and iron your edges one final time:

You should now have a perfectly straight fabric strip, ready to sew onto your apron.

Open up your towel and lay right side up with the bottom edge towards you. Line your ruler up with the bottom edge of the towel (I put my strip 2.5" from the edge but place it where you think it looks best.) Place your fabric strip along the top edge of the ruler and pin in place:

Turn the towel over and wrap the extra fabric around the back. Iron and trim to 1":

Turn the edge under 1/2" and press to set the crease:

Sew around all edges of the strip, staying as close as possible to the edge (1/4" or less).

When you get to the short sides, sew a little further away from the edge (between 1/4" and 1/2")to catch more of the extra fabric on the back.

Backstitch where your stitches meet and admire your perfect applique stripe:

Step 3: Now that we're done embellishing our apron, we'll prepare the sash. First, take the two sash pieces and sew the short ends together to make one long piece:

Cut a piece of freezer paper 5"x40" and repeat the folding process from step 2. I like to iron the edges on one half of the sash, peel off the freezer paper, move it to the other half of the sash and finish ironing my edges. You should be able to use your one piece of freezer paper a few times before it stops sticking.

Take your sash and fold it in half, ironing to make a crease.

With the folded edge at the top cut the end to a 45 degree angle.

Open the sashing and trim the point.

Fold the tip over and iron to make a crease:

Fold the diagonal sides over 1/2" (or whatever it takes to get them to come together at the center)and iron.

When you fold your sashing together again, you should have a nice pointy edge:

Repeat with other end of sashing.

Step 4: Now we'll attach the sash to the apron. To do this, we need to gather the top edge. Make sure your apron is folded in half with a nice crease.

Prepare a length of thread that is at least 36" long (or 72" if doubling your thread like I did).

Start your running stitches about 1/4" from the top edge. Make each stitch approximately 1/4".

Continue until you reach the end. Smooth the apron and leave the needle and thread in place. Measure 12" from each side of the apron and mark with a pin (I folded my apron in half to get the pins in the same place...which is why these photos might be confusing).

Pull your gathering string until the apron is the appropriate width for your body (about half your waist measurement). When you get the right size, take the needle and sew a knot at the edge of your apron to keep the gathers from spreading out again. Trim your thread and begin to arrange your gathers. I like to put more gathers on the sides and leave the front with just a few gathers. This is where the pins come in...when you gather your fabric, make sure that the edge to the pin measures the same on both sides.

When you have the gathers where you want them, place the edge of your apron on the edge of your sash. I like to overlap the apron and sash by about 1/2".

Remove your pins, fold old over your sash and pin in place, starting at the center. Your apron will want to curve so keep adjusting as you pin. When you pin, make sure the edges of the sash line up on either side of the apron. This is a bit tricky but it's important that they line up well.

Hold up the "almost apron" and see how cute it is...oh, and also to see that everything looks like it's in the right place:

Sew your sash from end to end, staying 1/4" from the edge.

Sew over the place where the sash meets the apron a few times for strength. continue on, sewing over the gathers:

Sometimes my stitches come out even and straight...and sometimes they're a little wobbly. I don't think it matters much, as long as you catch both sides of the sash in your stitches:

And that's it...now you have a perfectly pleasant (and super absorbant) apron! I know that seems like a lot of steps but it's actually very simple once you get going.

This week's project requires a truly tiny block (6") so rather than drive you all crazy with truly tiny pieces, I picked an easy block. It's an oldie but goodie...the Shoofly Block:

To make a 12" block:
-Fabric A: cut 4 - 4.5" x 4.5"
-Fabric B: cut 2 - 5" x 5", cut 1 - 4.5" x 4.5"
-Fabric C: cut 2 - 5" x 5" (Traditionally, fabrics C and A are the same so you can do that if you like)

*This week's project tutorial will require a 6" block.*
To make a 6" block:
-Fabric A: cut 4 - 2.5" x 2.5"
-Fabric B: cut 2 - 3" x 3", cut 1 - 2.5" x 2.5"
-Fabric C: cut 2 - 3" x 3"

Draw a diagonal line on the back of your Fabric C squares. Pair with your two Fabric B squares, right sides together:

Sew 1/4" on both sides of the line:

Cut along the line:

Press open and trim to 4.5" (2.5" if you're making a 6" block)

Arrange your pieces (sorry for the crooked photo):

Sew into rows:

And sew your rows together to finish the block:

Trim to 12.5" (or 6.5").

Flying Geese Tutorial

Lesly was right when she said that making flying geese is "mind-bogglingly tedious." All of that cutting and matching and pressing can get extremely confusing, not to mention extremely old (extremely fast!).

It turns out, there's a better way. Thanks to the kind folks at Quilter's Cache, I learned a couple new ways to make flying geese.

This tutorial covers my favorite method. It creates four flying geese at once. Of course, there is a little bit of math, but don't worry, it's only simple addition.

Step 1 - Use the formulas to find your cutting measurements. W = width of your finished block. H = height of your finished block. Measurements listed are in inches.

W" + 1 1/4" = A
H" + 7/8" = B

Example: If I want my finished geese to be 2" wide by 1" high, I would plug in my finished measurements to find that A = 3 1/4" and B = 1 7/8".

W" + 1 1/4" = A
2" + 1 1/4" = A
3 1/4" = A

H" + 7/8"= B

1" + 7/8" = B

1 7/8" = B

Step 2 - Cut as directed using measurements you figured in Step 1.

Cut 1 square using measurement A. This is for the base.
Cut 4 squares using measurement B. These are for the tips.

Step 3 - Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each small square.

Step 4 - Place two small squares in opposite corners. Their tips will overlap just a bit. Sew a 1/4" seam on either side of your marked line.

Step 5 - Cut on the marked line. Press seams as desired. You will have two pieces that look like small hearts.

Step 6 - Place each of your remaining small squares in the corner of your hearts. Once again, sew a 1/4" seam on either side of your marked line.

Step 7 - Cut on the marked line. Press seams as desired. You now have four flying geese units!

Eight Hands Around - Fix

Hi, people. I am a moron and listed all kinds of wrong measurements for the 12" block. I made mine in 8", so I didn't notice that the 12" measurements were off. I've fixed them in the tutorial, but I want everyone to know they need to look again.

If you already started, please don't give up. Make another one, I'm begging you. I love this block and want to see your creations in our flickr pool.

Here are the new, correct measurements:

Step 1 - Cut light fabric as follows:

Cut 1 7 1/4" square. Divide into four quarter-square triangles. (8" block -- 5 1/4")
Cut 1 4 1/4" square. Divide into four quarter-square triangles. (8" block -- 3 1/4")
Cut 2 3 7/8" squares. Divide each into half-square triangles. (8" block -- 2 7/8")
Cut 1 3 1/2" square. (8" block -- 2 1/2")
Cut 4 2" squares. (8" block -- 1 1/2")

Step 2 - Cut medium fabric as follows:

Cut 4 2 3/8" squares. Divide each into half-square triangles. (8" block -- 1 7/8")

Step 3 - Cut dark fabric as follows:

Cut 6 3 7/8" squares. Divide each into half-square triangles. (8" block -- 2 7/8")

"Quilted" Canvas Tutorial

Do you ever make one block and then have no desire to make enough for an entire quilt? Because, you know, sometimes the block is really complicated or you're just not obsessed anymore? Do you have "orphan" blocks that you love but don't know what to do with?

Hopefully you do because this week's project will show you how to turn those blocks into art.

Materials:
1 – 12.5”x12.5” (unfinished) quilt block (we used the Eight Hands Around block)
4 - 2.5"x13" strips of quilting fabric
1 – 12"x12” piece of cotton quilt batting
1 – 12"x12" canvas, 3/4" deep (a super cheap canvas is fine...mine cost $5)(Also, if your canvas is deeper, you will need to compensate by making your strips wider than 2.5")

Staple gun

Step 1: First we need to prepare our fabric strips. Place your four fabric strips wrong side up and fold the short ends over 1/2" (press with your iron). Make sure your strips measure 12"x2.5" when you're done. These will wrap around the sides of the canvas so it's important to be exact.

Step 2: Now we'll sew the strips to the block. Place one strip along the edge of your block, right sides together. Make sure the strip is centered along the edge...the strip should be 1/4" shorter than the block on both sides.

Sew a 1/4" seam and make sure to press your seam open:

Repeat with all four strips. I prefer to sew them in opposite pairs so your second strip should go along the edge opposite the first. When you get to your third and fourth strip, you'll notice that your block is now 12" and your strip lines up exactly along the edge:

After you press your third and fourth strips open, you should have a nice corner that has nice finished edges:

Step 3: Now we'll cover our canvas. Iron your block again to make sure your seams are really, really flat. Then, turn your block over and place your batting so it lines up with the edges of the block:

Place your canvas so it lines up with the edges of your batting/block:

Fold the sides of your block up and staple once on each side. It's important to keep your fabric tight without stretching it too much...you want the front to be taught but you don't want to warp the block.

Carefully turn your canvas over to make sure everything looks good. If it doesn't, take the staples out and re-center your canvas. If everything is fine, staple opposite sides of the canvas, keeping your fabric taught as you go, until you reach the corners. I like to tuck the end in a little to reduce bulk:

Repeat with the remaining two sides of the canvas, turning over the corner as you reach the end:

If you've done everything right, you will have a tiny gap at the corners:

or a larger gap because no one's perfect:

I like to sew up the corners but that's optional. Here's a great video that shows how to do a ladder stitch...it makes invisible stitches!

Once you're done sewing, turn over your canvas and enjoy your custom work of art!

Eight Hands Around

What a cute block! In this tutorial you're going to get brave and sew with triangles, instead of cheater squares. Don't worry-- if you don't press too hard and pull too much, they'll turn out just fine. But, you're going to wish you had eight hands when it comes time to make this.

This tutorial lists measurements for a 12" finished (12.5" unfinished) block. Measurements for an 8" block will be in parenthesis. Follow all steps for either size.

Requirements:
3 fabrics (light, medium, dark)
Cutting tools

Step 1 - Cut light fabric as follows:

Cut 1 7 1/4" square. Divide into four quarter-square triangles. (8" block -- 5 1/4")
Cut 1 4 1/4" square. Divide into four quarter-square triangles. (8" block -- 3 1/4")
Cut 2 3 7/8" squares. Divide each into half-square triangles. (8" block -- 2 7/8")
Cut 1 3 1/2" square. (8" block -- 2 1/2")
Cut 4 2" squares. (8" block -- 1 1/2")

Step 2 - Cut medium fabric as follows:

Cut 4 2 3/8" squares. Divide each into half-square triangles. (8" block -- 1 7/8")

Step 3 - Cut dark fabric as follows:

Cut 6 3 7/8" squares. Divide each into half-square triangles. (8" block -- 2 7/8")

Step 4 - Place the largest square on your cutting board. This will be your center square. Leave it there.

Step 5 - Begin making flying geese. Using a 1/4" seam, sew the longest side of your medium fabric triangles to the side of your smallest light fabric triangles. Chain piece if desired. Press seams to one side.

Step 6 - Sew remaining medium-fabric triangles to your partial flying geese. Make sure to join the longest side of your medium-fabric triangles to the hypotenuse of your light-fabric triangles. Press seams to one side. You know have four flying-geese blocks.

Step 7 - Take your four 2" squares, along with your flying geese, and lay them out as pictured. Join together as shown, pressing seams to the side as needed.

Step 8 - Using your large light-fabric and dark-fabric triangles, lay out four units as shown.

Step 9 - Create flying geese using the same method from step 6. You will have four geese when you finish this step.

Step 10 - Using your remaining light-fabric and dark-fabric triangles, create half-square triangle blocks. You will have four half-square blocks when you finish this step.

Step 11 - Lay out your pieces as pictured. Join together as shown, pressing seams to the side as needed.

Step 12 - Breathe a great sigh of relief. You are done!

Potholder Tutorial

Good morning everyone. Today we're making potholders! Sorry if you think potholders are lame but I love them (and I don't even like to cook). They're pretty and useful and fast and take relatively little fabric. And they're an excellent way to show off your blocks and use up scraps! Read on for the tutorial.

Materials for one potholder:
1 – 8.5”x8.5” (unfinished) quilt block (we used the Broken Dishes block)
1 – 9.25”x9.25” piece of cotton quilting fabric for the back (you can make the back out of scraps so long as the finished piece measures 9.25")
1 – 2.75” piece of cotton quilting fabric, cut selvedge to selvedge (or a minimum of 39” long) for the binding
Cotton thread to match binding

1 – 9”x9” piece of cotton quilt batting (I use Warm & White)
1 – 9”x9” piece of Insul-Bright*

*(I buy Insul-Bright by the yard at fabric.com. If you don’t want to use this, I’ve heard you can use two or more layers of cotton batting...though I haven’t tried it so I can’t recommend it. Also, Insul-Bright is heat-resistant, not heat-proof…so always be careful.)

Step 1: Stack your materials in the following order: back (wrong side up), Insul-Bright (shiny side down), quilt batting, quilt block (right side up).

Pin your layers together. The two layers of batting tend to shift during quilting so this step is really important.

Quilt as desired:

Trim to 8.5”x8.5”

Step 2: Now we need to machine sew the binding to the potholder. You can follow our tutorial or use your own preferred method (be sure to compensate for the extra thickness of the potholder when choosing a binding width).

Trim one end of your binding strip to a 45° angle, place along the edge of the potholder (right side down) and fold over the edge ½” (I like to press it with the iron to get a nice crease).

Fold your binding strip in half and pin ½” away from the edge.

Start sewing at the pin and sew approximately 3/8” away from the side.

Continue until about 3/8” from the end of the potholder. Cut threads and remove from machine.

At the corner, pull back the binding perpendicular to the binding you just sewed down:

Then, fold the binding strip back over itself at the edge of the potholder. Hold in place:

And pin to secure your fold:

Begin sewing from the edge and keep 3/8” away from the side.

Repeat this process for the next three corners. Before you sew the last corner, trim the binding strip at an angle. Make sure it overlaps the beginning of the strip by about ½”.

Tuck the edge under the folded edge and pin in place.

Sew until your stitches overlap and trim off the little triangle to reduce bulk:

I like to trim the corners a bit to prevent the binding from getting too bulky. If you want to do this, trim off a sliver of batting…but make sure to do it in exactly the same place I did in the picture. If you trim the other side of the corner, you’ll cut a hole in your binding.

Press your binding away from the center (I use an iron to get a sharp edge)

Step 3: To finish the potholder, we need to hand sew the binding to the back (you can use your machine if you like attaching binding that way).

Turn binding to the back side of potholder and use pins to hold it in place. Pick a thread that matches your binding.

Now we'll whipstitch the binding to the back. First, tie a knot at the end of your thread and insert the needle near the edge of the potholder where it will be covered by the binding. Bring the needle up where the edge of the binding will be when it's folded into place.

Press the binding down and bring up the needle through the edge of the binding (from the bottom).

Insert the needle into the potholder through the batting only and bring it back up through the edge of the binding.

Continue on until you reach the seam. I like to do a few whipstitches up the seam to keep it from popping open.

Continue on until you get close to the corner. When you’re about 3/8” inches away from the edge, stop stitching and press the binding down like in the picture.

Fold the binding up to make a mitered corner.

I like to take a few stitches up the miter to tack it into place before continuing on.

When you run out of thread, make a stitch and run your needle through to the edge of the potholder where you won’t see a knot.

Tie a knot and start a new length of thread.

Once you get all the binding sewn down, sew a knot near the edge of the binding and bury the end of the thread.

And you're done!

You’ve probably noticed by now that this potholder doesn’t have a loop. I do this for two reasons: 1)I’ve never taken the time to figure out how to put in a loop and 2) I like the clean look of the potholder without one. I like to set them on the table to use as trivets…or under a pretty vase with flowers. I like that they’re mini quilts that are useful.

Round 2, FAQ

Just a few quick notes about Round 2. We'll be making 12 blocks this round, one block every week. Some will be very easy (like today's) and some will be more complicated (like next week's).

As you've already seen, in addition to 12.5" blocks, we'll sometimes post alternate sizes. For those who want a more varried look to their sampler quilts, it might be a good idea to work up the blocks in different sizes. Yardage will vary depending on which size blocks you make. I'd estimate no more than 2.5 yards total to make all 12.5" blocks. I didn't keep track last time and I know I ran out of some of my favorite fabrics so you might want to get more than you think you'll need.

If you're making projects, yardage and supplies will vary. I've done my best to come up with 12 different ways to use our blocks and hopefully you'll like at least one of them.

Broken Dishes

Alright everyone...we begin round two with the classic "Broken Dishes" block:

To make a 12" block:
-cut 4: 7" x 7"
(you can use 2-4 different fabrics depending on the look you want)

*This week's project tutorial will require 8" blocks.*
To make an 8" block:
-cut 4: 5" x 5"

First we'll make half square triangles. Draw a diagonal line on the backs of two squares. If you're using only two fabrics, make sure that both of the squares in this step are the same fabric.

Pair these squares with the remaining two squares, right sides together. Sew 1/4" on each side of the line:

Cut along the line:

Press open and trim to 6.5"x6.5" (or 4.5"x4.5" for an 8" block):

Arrange your squares into opposite pairs:

Sew two squares together:

Sew your pairs together to finish the block:

Trim to 12.5"x12.5" (or 8.5"x8.5") if necessary.

I’m so happy to be your guest blogger … that sounds way too official for me, but I’ll go with it, just for today. A little about me … I’m first a wife and second a mom, my heart belongs to my Lord and He filled my soul with creativity. I have a BA in Graphic Design though I never used it formally. Instead I worked as a project manager for a national bank until I had my son almost 6 years ago. Since then I’ve enjoyed raising him up and having more time to create. Three years ago I started sewing and haven’t stopped since. Two years ago I started selling on Etsy to support my habit :). Last year I tried my hand at my local farmers’ market. And I’m sure this year holds greats things as well.

I love talking fabric and patterns and design and color … a nice big glass of iced tea and a fresh plate of cookies would make it perfect a perfect afternoon. I love seeing this resurgence of handmade goods and quality and value being placed upon them. The melding of an ‘old tradition’ with modern punches of color and perhaps a fresh look at traditional designs makes me oh so happy. Giving a handmade gift never gets old and is the reason my little pedal is to the metal (or carpet) almost every single day.

Modern Pinwheel Table Runner

What you need:
1 Charm Pack {40 squares} – You will only need 16 squares
3/4 yd. Solid {Kona White} Fabric
1 Fat Quarter for Binding
Batting

The Pinwheels are made with 5" [charm] squares. 2 of each print for the pinwheel blades and 2 of each for the solid fabric.

All seams are 1/4"
Finished size - approx. 12” x 38”

Start Cutting:

From White:
1 - 5" x 44" strip (for pinwheels): Cut again into 5" squares
2 - 2.5" x 44" strips (for exterior sashing)
1 – 1.5" x 44" strips (for interior sashing)
1 – 12.5” x44” strip (further cut according to Diagram A)

From 5” [charm] squares:
Choose 10 charm squares for pinwheel blades and your 10 solid squares: Cut in half diagonally

Start Sewing:
•Sew white triangles to print triangles, long sides together. Press towards print.
•Sew 4 of these squares to make one Pinwheel block. I pressed seams open when joining squares to eliminate bulk.

•Make 5 Blocks and square to 8 1/2" (using the center line to square).

•Add 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" white piece on two sides of Pinwheel block EXCEPT the last two [ends]. For example, block/1 ½” sashing/ block/1 ½” sashing/ block/1 ½” sashing/ block

•Sew 2 1/2" borders to each side then 1 on top and 1 on bottom.

Create backing by following Diagram B and the following instructions:

•Choose 6 more charm squares (to be “labeled” A-F)
•Cut charm squares A, B & C in half (you now have 6 – 2.5” x 5” strips)
•Sew both A strips to a remaining 2 ½” sashing piece
•Sew B & C strips together (2.5” x 9.5” strip), press seams. Center on remaining 5th pinwheel block and sew to the top and bottom of the block.
•Sew charm squares D, E & F together in a row
•Sew one of the A sashing strips to the D,E,F strip
•Sew one of the A sashing strips to the B,C Pinwheel Block
•Sew a strip of 2 ½” sashing to the other side of the B/C Pinwheel Block
•Sew the A/B/C Block to the D/E/F/A Block
•Sew additional widths of white solid on to each side to give you necessary length
•Press and trim backing

What's Modern: Quilting

Not that I'm to that point or anything, but I've been thinking about how I'll quilt my sampler quilt. But the more I think about it, the more I just don't know how to quilt a sampler quilt (in general) and a modern sampler quilt, specifically.

So for now, here are the ideas I like best...

First, I've always wanted to try this diagonal quilting from katie did.

Or what about Ashley's curvy line quilting?

Or wavy quilting to offset all those sharp angles?

Or what about parallel lines or some sort of a grid?

I hope once I get the top finished, it'll tell me what to pick. What about you? What sort of quilting are you going to do?

Quilt Along: Round 2

Welcome to Round 2 of the Modify Tradition quilt-along. This round will be sort of the same as last time...but sort of different too.

The part that's the same: every week we'll post a tutorial for one traditional block. We'll feature 12 blocks this round which you can use to make a sampler quilt. If there are any you don't like, feel free to substitute any Round 1 blocks you like better. The first tutorial will go up February 1.

Now, on to the part that's different: Jennifer and I won't be making sampler quilts. Instead, we're going to use our blocks to create smaller, more manageable projects.

And because this is still a quilt along, we'll provide a tutorial for the project featured that week. We want to give everyone the chance to quilt along with us this time...so if you don't have the time or inclination to make a sampler quilt, there will be plenty of other ways to use your blocks.

So, what sorts of things are we going to make? We'll definitely make some things that are nice to look at...

...and some useful things (that are still nice to look at).

But wait! There's still more: we'll be posting a giveaway every week! The plan is to give away the item we made for the tutorial (and maybe some bonus giveaways for people who are quilting along with us).

And, to start things off right, I'm pleased to announce that we'll have our very first guest blogger next week. This very talented sewer/artist has generously offered to post a mini tutorial that shows just what we hope to accomplish in this next round.

Languishing

Hi, everyone. Long time no post. That's because my project has been languishing in the cabinet while I got other things done, including Christmas gifts, unfinished projects, moving my boyfriend in, seeing one of my sisters get engaged, and going back to work.

The real reason I'm here, however, is to ask if you saw this. What a gorgeous sampler quilt! Nettie used a somewhat traditional layout complimented by a fresh and interesting color palette.

Hopefully mine turns out this nice.

I've been busy trying to catch up on my quilt and I'm happy to report that I have all 12 blocks sashed and ready for their final white borders. My quilt is turning out so huge that I can't fit everything in one photo. Yikes!

Now, on to new business: Jennifer and I are scheming up something new and exciting for the next round of our quilt along. We're going to start posting new block tutorials in February to give everyone (including us) some time to catch up.

Quilt Update

Hey everyone! I just wanted to post a quick update on my sampler quilt.

What do you think?

I really like them side by side like that and I'd love to sash them in white. It's sort of the traditional layout but not quite. I finished 7 blocks and I've almost finished putting the borders on the last 5. I picked out my 12 favorite blocks for the top...I'm not sure what I'll do with the other three because I already have a different idea for the back.

I've been working on these green and blue log cabin blocks and they're mostly finished. I was thinking that maybe this could be a double sided quilt...with no official front or back.

So, how are your blocks coming along? Is anyone finished with 12 or more? Have you decided what your layout will be?

Nine Patch Aqua

I spotted this gorgeous Nine-Patch quilt on flickr. The colors and fabrics used give a very fresh feeling, especially paired with the white sashing. I like how the quilter didn't put sashing around all the edges-- it creates visual interest.

I also like the blue and white blocks best-- the ones with only four blue squares blend into the sashing nicely. Imagine a whole quilt made with just that block!
